Role of Revision and Practice in SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam

As discussed in SSC CGL Tier 1 strategy, there is no alternative to revision, especially in SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam. You can recall all formula’s and rules only if you have revised it multiple times. Solving questions in 45-55 seconds becomes critical if you have not revised and practiced previous year question papers.

“70:30 Rule” is best suited for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam

It means that your 70% of the study time must be spent in reading new topics and concepts while 30% of the time must be given to revision of topics you have studied yesterday. (As simple as that)

Its recommended to keep revision slot early in the morning when you get up. Moreover, also have a 25-30 minutes revision session before you go to sleep (To revise what you have studied whole day)

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern and Syllabus

Devote 1 complete day to understand SSC CGL Exam Pattern (Of Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and Tier 4). Because at the end you have to face these exams to clear SSC CGL exam. So, you must know exact pattern’s of these exam. SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam pattern has been discussed in  previous article. We will directly focus on Tier 2 pattern:

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam is “Computer Based Examination” which is conducted in near by exam centers as per your preference given at the time of filling exam form.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam consists of 4 papers, out of which Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory for all posts while:

  • Paper 3 (Statistics): Only for candidates who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO)
  • Paper 4 General Studies (Finance and Economics): Only for candidates who apply for the post of Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer

Time Duration for Each Paper: 2 Hours  (Time for each paper will be 2 hours 40 minutes for Visually Handicapp, Hearing Handicapped and Orthopaedically Handicapped)

1/4th Negative marking for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam. Let us see marks deducted per 1 wrong answer in paper 1,2, 3 and 4 of Tier 2 Exam:

Negative marking may seem different for each paper as number of marks for each question is different in 4 papers.

Realistic Target setting for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam

Its must to be highly targetted while attempting the Paper 1 and Paper 2 of SSC CGL Exam. We must have a rough plan about how many questions to attempt so that we can complete that target from our strong sections of paper.

Our Aim is to score 180+ Marks in SSC CGL Qauantitative Aptitude (Maths) paper as well as English paper. So our total will be somewhere around 360+ Marks in Tier 2 Exam.

Calculating Marks as per out Tier 2 attempt:

(180-2=178 marks)

Here, 0.5 marks deducted for 1 wrong Answer

SSC CGL Tier 2 English Target (Paper 2):

Number of Questions to attempt out of 200 (Our Target) 188 questions (186-188)
Correct Attempt (Minimum) 181 Questions
Wrong Attempt (Maximum) 7 Questions
Our Target Score: 180 Marks

Calculating Marks as per out attempt in Tier 2:

(181-1.75=179.25 marks)

Here, 0.25 marks deducted for 1 wrong Answer

Try to score as high marks in Maths (Quantitative Aptitude), that is, Paper 1 of SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam. Because some questions of English paper can be tough. So, try to bring 360+ marks with any combination depending on your strong areas.

Let us begin with the most important part of this article, that is, strategy for Quantitative Aptitude of SSC CGL Exam Tier 2. And believe me guys, its possible to score 190-195 marks in Maths (Quantitative) paper because:

  • Pattern and type of Questions is same every year
  • Once quality preparation is done as per given strategy, no question will be out of our sources
  • Scoring 175-180 is difficult in English section, but thats not the case in Maths paper.

2. Maths can be mainly divided into 2 types: Arithmetic and Advanced Topics. Ratio of questions asked is 2:3 (Arithmetic:Advanced Topics) So, begin your preparation with advanced topics which includes 4 pillars of Maths paper:

  • Mensuration
  • Geometry

Instead of directly beginning with SSC CGL specific books, do these basic chapters from 9th and 10th NCERT Books of Maths. It will take not more than a week. On the other hand, NCERT’s will build your fundation for advanced maths topics.

3. After completing the Maths NCERT, directly shift to these 3 basic books:

  • Best Book for Advanced Maths : Advanced Maths Book by Rakesh Yadav sir 
  • Best Maths Practice Source for SSC CGL: SSC Mathematics Chapterwise & Typewise Solved Papers – Kiran Publication

With my personal experience, if you manage to solve the above 3 books, you can score as high as 195 Marks out of 200 (Seems impossible, but its fact!)

3 tips for Maths (Quantitative) paper by SSC CGL Toppers 2018-19:

  1. Don’t hurry to begin SSC CGL specific books. Dedicate more time on clearing basic concepts which is very important in SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam.
  2. Complete the above mentioned 3 books and revise them atleast once (to score 195/200 Marks)
  3. In SSC CGL exam, “Hard Work beats Talent, when Talent Doesn’t Work Hard”

English Preparation for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam (Paper 2)

Let us see Chapter-wise weightage of English Paper (Tier 2) so that we can manage time as per weightage of each topic:

In tier 2 of SSC CGL exam, you have to solve 200 English Questions in 2 hours of time. This will require good hold over the subject and type of questions asked in this paper because:

  • Our aim is to score 180 marks, which needs good knowledge as well as rigorous practice (It will be not soo easy)

While designing the Tier 1 strategy of English, we have considered tier 2 preparation as well. So, today we will have a overview of strategy for English section of SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam:

  1. Learning 10 new Synonyms, antonyms, One word substitution, Misspelled words and Idiom and Phrases on daily basis. This will result in 50 new learnings everyday which will result into learning 1500 new things each month (Just make sure you revise things done every morning so that you don’t forget it at the end of month)
  2. You must use Plinth to Paramount by Neetu Singh (Volume 1) book for Vocabulary section.
  3. For english grammar, study topics like Noun, Pronoun, tenses, use of adjective, adverbs, Active and Passive voice, Direct Indirect speech,etc from Wren and Martin English Grammar Book. (Strictly solve exercises of each topic after study)

Clearing Basic topics from Wren and Martin will not yield direct questions, but it will be indirectly helpful for all other topics like spotting the error, Improvement of sentences, Jumbled Paragraph and Sentence Rearrangement, Comprehension.

4. If you are from hindi medium, then you must have book named “A Mirror of Common Errors” for English Grammar related questions. It contains explanation of each question in Hindi Language in highly simplified manner. (Due to which grasping new concepts become very easy in our mother tongue)

5. Daily Only 1 editorial reading from The Hindu/ Indian Express and solving 5 English passages from Kiran Publication book.

6. Now, majority of your theoretical part is covered. So what is remaining? Rigorous practice from best sources for SSC CGL Tier 2. Best source fro parctice is:

  • SSC English Language Chapterwise Solved Papers: Kiran Publication
  • English Volume 2 (KD Publication) By Neetu Singh   

If you manage to complete these 2 books (during practice), no one can stop you from scoring 170-180 marks in English paper . (80% aspirants fail here !!)

3 tips for English paper by SSC CGL Toppers 2018-19:

  1. Without studying the basic grammar rules from Wren and Martin Book, don’t expect to score 175-180 marks. (scoring 140-150 marks is easy, but of no use !)
  2. Daily only 1 editorial reading can give awesome results in Tier 1 as well as Tier 2 English paper (for comprehension and cloze test)
  3. No option to practice if you want to complete paper on time !

Statistics Preparation for SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam (Paper 3)

We will focus on Statistics and GS (Finance and Economics) preparation in separate article. Here I will like to tell you 2 things which you must remember:

  1. Focus more on Paper 1 and Paper 2. Many aspirant are not able to clear the SSC CGL Tier 2 Cut off just due to paper 3 and paper 4. So, first be master at first 2 papers and then focus on paper 3 and 4.
  2. After completing paper 1 and paper study, complete Economics NCERT of 11th and 12th standard before beginning any advanced study. And do most of economics study from Economy page of The Hindu/Indian Express (Understanding economy concepts that come in newspaper on daily basis)

If you have not revised, you are planning to Fail !

As simple as that. If you can’t revise what you have studied, your preparation level is equivalent to Fresher.
